There are hundreds of popular sports that are regularly played on a weekly basis, most of the common ones you will most probably recognize like, football, tennis, basketball, hockey and so on. But this is not a list of sports you know or hear about in the sportsnyheder, this is a list of 6 unusual sports that you probably never new existed.
1. Man vs. Horse Marathon
Well the name of this strange sport pretty much says it all, its a marathon race between man and horse. The distance is usually around 22 miles and its played in Wales, UK.
Now, if you are like me you are probably thinking that an animal built for hard labor would win each and every time but surprisingly, men occasionally win this race. Exactly two humans since 1987, so, yes, the odds are against you but it is possible.
2. Unicycle Hockey
I played hockey in school a few times and it was a violent sport with everybody thrashing away trying to hit the puck, but playing it on a unicycle!!!
Now as you can imagine just trying to ride a unicycle is hard, then trying to play hockey while riding the unicycle is even tricker and then to make things even more interesting the rules say you can not touch the floor with your hockey stick or lift it above your waist. This is the type of sport which will make you want to give yourself a wedgie.
3. Toe Wrestling
I have heard of arm wrestling, thumb wrestling but toe wrestling!! This is a new one for me.
The rules of this mainly British sport are basically the same as for thumb war, only here played with feet. Most leagues even actually chant the ‘One, two, three, for, I declare a thumb war’ intro before the match. And to make the whole experience twice as sad, it’s usually customary for the players to take off each other’s shoes and socks.
4. Octopush
This sport is only good for those who can hold their breath for long periods of time, so that rules me out.
Octopush or otherwise known as underwater hockey is a non-contact sport where two teams compete to maneuver a puck across the bottom of a swimming pool. So its just like hockey but underwater, this sport has become popular in countries such as the UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa.
5. Wife carrying race
And once again the name says it all, its a race and you have to carry your wife along with you.
This sport was first introduced in Finland and the objective is for the male to carry the female through a special obstacle course in the fastest time. Major competitions are held in Sonkajarvi, Finland, Monona, Wisconsin and in Marquette, Michigan.
6. Bog Snorkeling
This unusual sport is a bit on the disgusting side but apparently some people enjoy taking part in it.
Bog snorkeling is a sporting event where competitors swim in a water-filled trench cut through a peat bog. Competitors must wear snorkels and flippers and can only complete the course by swimming with their flippers and not using traditional swimming techniques.
The World Bog Snorkelling Championships take place every August Bank Holiday in a dense peat bog near Llanwrtyd Wells, in Wales.

So there you are 6 unusual sports from around the world, did you notice most of them came from the UK? They’ll make a sport out of anything in Britain.
If you know of any other unusual sport tell us about it in the comments box below and if its strange enough we’ll add it to our list.
