Tips And Tricks For Passing Your Driving Test

Facing a driving test may be one of the most nerve-wracking things you will ever do. So here are some tips and tricks for passing your driving test.

Even the most careful, well-prepared drivers can go to pieces during the test. Some even have to go through the stress of a test a number of times before they finally pass.

So lets kick off with 18 tips and tricks for passing your driving test.

1. Parallel parking, reversing round a corner, and hill starts are some of the dreaded parts of the driving test practice, practice and practice until you can perfect these maneuvers.

2. If you have any choice in the matter, try to schedule your test at a time when there is likely to be less traffic – a test in the middle of rush hour is obviously going to be more stressful than one in the middle of the day.

3. Make sure that all of the vehicle’s documentation is up to date, and that all of your lights are working.

4. If you will be using a car that you haven’t driven before (e.g. the instructor’s car), be sure to familiarize yourself with it – especially the brakes, turning signals and wipers. Also make sure that all of the mirrors are optimally adjusted.

5. Some tests involve knowledge of where to top up oil etc. Even if your test will not test you in this area, it makes sense to know how to check the fluid levels, and to make sure that the car is in excellent condition before you have your test.

6. Arrange to have a driving lesson just before your test. Ask the instructor to take you on the test route (if known) a number of times. This will help you to feel more confident as well as a little more relaxed. This is also an excellent opportunity to become familiar with the car you will be using for the test, if you haven’t already done so.

7. Make sure that you have double-checked the time and date you are supposed to have your test and that you know exactly where the test center is. Allow plenty of time to sit down and relax for a few minutes before the time for your test.

8. Turn off your cell phone!

9. Bring your theory book (even if you have already passed the theory part of your test) and refresh your memory on the road signs and hand signals before you start.

10. When it’s time to drive, make sure that you fasten your seatbelt. When you are nervous it’s amazing what you can forget to do!

11. Make sure that your hands are in the proper position on the steering wheel – it would not be good to start your driving test with only one hand on the wheel!

12. Resist the temptation to look for the examiner’s reactions, or to look at what they are writing – keep your eyes on the road!

13. Examiners will be making sure first and foremost that you are a safe driver. Use your signals liberally (including when driving away from the kerb and changing lanes) and make it obvious that you are using your mirrors! The instructor will be checking to see that you are aware of everything around you, so exaggerate your movements slightly when looking in the mirrors and checking the blind spot to make sure they notice!

14. Try to show that you are being aware and observant of potential dangers – for example, take your foot off the gas and check your mirrors if you approach a potential hazard.

15. Make sure that you stop completely at stop signs. Before the test, revise how you should proceed at four way stops.

16. Stay within the speed limit and listen carefully when you receive directions or instructions. If you don’t understand the directions, make sure to ask and get the instructor to clarify rather than just guessing.

17. Make sure as you are driving to keep a safe distance between your car and the one in front.

18. Try to stay calm at all times. If you feel yourself getting flustered, try taking some deep breaths and focus on what you are doing – imagine that the examiner is your best friend instead of a scary examiner!

Hopefully these pointers will help you to pass your test. However, even if you do fail, remember, it’s only a driving test. Pick yourself up, stay positive, and calmly and politely ask the examiner for specifics on why he failed you. Immediately book a lesson with your instructor so that you can work on those areas. Doing this will also help you to keep your confidence intact. You should also book another test as soon as possible.
