Too much time on your hands? All that sitting around watching Netflix isn’t going to help. In fact, reports show that having too much free time can be detrimental to your physical health.

It’s important to stay active, either mentally or physically and engaged when you’re not at work, or you could turn into a couch potato.

Adding a time-consuming hobby into the mix should liven up your daily routine. You can devote a few hours to your newfound passion every day or on the weekends when you have nothing better to do. Trying new things can also boost your memory, improve concentration and increase your overall adaptability by stimulating your brain in new ways.

When choosing a hobby, make sure it’s something that brings you joy. This activity should be calming and ultimately relieve stress, not stress you out. You also want to make sure you find something that will keep you engaged for long periods of time. Get into one of these time-consuming hobbies to give yourself a worthy challenge.

Rebuilding Diesel Engines

Diesel engines and diesel parts are intricate mechanical machines that use highly compressed air and fuel to generate power. These vehicles need enough torque to haul thousands of pounds of materials and goods across long distances, so you will have your work cut out for you. They typically need to be rebuilt after 12,000 to 15,000 hours of driving time. The entire process can take anywhere from several weeks to the better part of the year, depending on the condition of the engine and your experience level.

Start by finding a rundown diesel truck to repair. You might even have a neighbor who will let you work on theirs for free. Take the pressure off by working on an engine that would otherwise go to waste. There are hundreds of repair tutorials online that you can use to rebuild the engine piece by piece. Start by testing specific parts and systems to see if they are still intact. Get rid of anything that contains rust or appears damaged. You should be able to find everything you need either online or at your local auto parts store. Shop for replacement diesel truck parts designed for specific makes and models online to make the engine run like new.

The turbocharger tends to be one of the least reliable parts of a diesel engine. Debris can clog the turbo, which is essentially a turbine with a spiral hose attached. This is the part that forces additional compressed air into the engine, which increases power. The housings can also break down, leading to poor fuel efficiency. Replace the turbo actuator as well to improve performance.

Go Electric

If you like spending time under the hood, do the environment a favor and convert your existing gas-powered vehicle into an EV or electric vehicle that can be charged at home or on the go. You will dramatically reduce your fuel consumption and carbon footprint to reduce the effects of climate change. You can also add an electric battery to your bicycle to give yourself a boost.

But going electric is no easy feat. You will need to rip out all the elements that aid the combustion process, including the engine, fuel lines, fuel injectors, and cooling systems, and replace them with an electric battery capable of delivering mechanical energy to the wheels. Electric vehicles also require fewer parts and components than their gas-powered counterparts, so you should be able to free up some extra room for storage.

Modeling and Miniatures

If you don’t have a lot of space on your hands, you can always reduce the size of your ambitions and invest in miniatures. You can find pre-made kits that come with everything you need to create tiny versions of iconic objects and buildings, including classic cars, famous monuments, and even entire cities. You will need a steady hand to delicately insert each piece into the arrangement using a pair of metal tweezers. If you’d rather chart your own journey, consider designing your own miniature using found objects and materials. It’s a cheap and time-consuming way to show off your creativity.

Computer Programming

Looking for something a little more sedentary? Try learning how to code computer programs, apps, and software. You can view free tutorials online or participate in a full coding boot camp.

These classes usually last a few months or more and give you access to students learning to master the same skills. It’s a great way to beef up your knowledge of the internet and the programs you use every day. By the end of the course, you should be able to design your own website or program from scratch however simple it may be.

Hunting or Fishing

Are you the patient type who loves the outdoors? Consider trying your hand at hunting or fishing to see how our ancestors used to do. Expect to spend hours sitting in a boat, squatting in trees or beside bushes as you wait for your prey to emerge. However, you should only hunt in designated areas during hunting seasons. Use the proper safety gear to avoid becoming a target yourself. You should also know how to use a firearm and be licensed to carry one. Plan on skinning and cooking whatever animal you kill to make sure it doesn’t go to waste. You will never think about food the same way again.

Hobbies are meant to be enjoyed, so they shouldn’t feel like work. Find something fun and engaging to fill your time. It’s all about trying new things and keeping your mind sharp
