The city of Melaka, in Malaysia, is a fascinating place to visit, and people come from far and wide to see its attractions, taste its food and experience all that it has to offer. Its history and culture extends back for hundreds of years, but at the same time, it is also a rapidly developing city, embracing new ideas and technologies. One good example of this, is the man-made island known as Melaka Island or Pulau Melaka. Part of a project to create new businesses and opportunities, it is also the home to the Melaka Straits Mosque.

Many mosques around the world claim to be the most beautiful, and the Melaka Straits Mosque certainly deserves its place amongst the contenders. It has been designed so that when the tide is high, the mosque appears to be floating on water. This is particularly dazzling on a bright, clear day.

The Melaka Straits Mosque has a golden dome which is more Middle Eastern in design than some of the other mosques in Melaka that tend to have a three tiered roofing system. It does have its unique and unusual aspects, though, and one of these, is its tower that looks very much like a lighthouse.

An active place of worship, the Melaka Straits Mosque is also a popular tourist destination, as it is very photogenic. The mosque, which is situated on Melaka Island, can be reached by foot, or a combination of foot and taxi from the city.
