Toucans are members of the Ramphastidae family of birds which come from the Neotropics of central and south America. They are known to be very brightly marked and have large bills which can be very beautiful and colorful. There are 40 types of Toucan many of which are now protected species. Most like to eat fruits, berries and nuts which are found in the rain forests.
Toucans species come in all sizes, the smallest is the lettered aracari which is 11 inches long and only weighs 4 ounces right up to the toco toucan which is nearly 3 feet long and weighs one and a half pounds.
Despite the size of the toucan’s bill, it is extremely light weight and filled with spongy tissue.
