Wedding Invitation History
It is the normally considered the duty of the mother of the bride to send invitations on behalf of the bride’s family either by sending them herself or having them arranged to be sent on her behalf with the help of relatives or friends to select the guests and mail the invitations by post.
Origins from the past
Prior to the invention of the moveable-type printing press in 1447 weddings in England were typically announced by means of a Town crier (a man who would walk through the streets announcing in a loud voice the news of the day). Traditionally anyone who could hear the town crier would automatically be included in the wedding the celebration.
In the Middle Ages, illiteracy was widespread, so the practice of sending written invitations started and become popular for the rich and the people of social rank . Wealthy families would commission monks who were very skilled in the art of Calligraphy to hand write their invitations. These documents would often carried the Coat of arms or the personal crest of the individual and were sealed with wax.
